The content of my work is inspired by my love of translating what attracts me visually to others. I am drawn to expressing the figure and the landscape in colorful and textural ways. My work is immediate, it is cathartic in a way. There is quick brush stroke, thick chunky color in places, scribbled lines, and a moment that can not be imitated. My landscape references are from places close my heart, the beaches on the Jersey shore and California. My figurative work concentrates mostly on the female form, but I do enjoy combining the figure with the landscape as an abstract element. For me when identifying with the figure as the subject, its about translating the moment or memory of time. Details of face and body may be obscured, but rather I'm interested in that emotion that existed from that memory, or moment while creating.
Along with painting I love bringing other media into the work. I use stencils, pastels, decorative papers and inks to create eye catching surfaces. Recently I have been using cut up old painting studies, decorative papers, and found words to create yoga inspired jewelry.
Artists who had given me great inspiration are the Bay Area Figurative Painters(past and present), the Abstract Expressionist School, Schiele, Klimt, and Beardon. As well as, the various rock and roll musicians I listen to as I paint!
WHO AM I AND WHY "Art for a Greater Good" ?
Besides being an artist I am a teacher of art. I am a student and teacher of yoga. I am a animal lover. I am a supporter of a cleaner environment, and I support what will empower girls to be strong women in the future. For me being an artist is not just about buying and selling work. It is about sharing. Using my talent to create awareness of social justice causes makes being an artist that much more for filling. I work with various non-for profit groups creating art fundraisers to spread education and great art. Some of the groups I have worked with are CLEAN OCEAN ACTION http://www.cleanoceanaction.org, Liberty Humane Society, and YOGA REACHES OUT http://wwww.yogareachesout.org. Not only could you own a beautiful piece of art, but also know that a portion of it helped an organization doing good in the world.
